What Does the Bible Say About Forgiveness?
Few words in the Christian vocabulary are used more loosely than forgiveness. It is offered as a quick fix, a way to end a hard conversation early. Scripture is more careful than that.
Does forgiving mean forgetting?
No. The biblical language is about release — cancelling a debt, refusing to demand payment. Memory remains. What changes is what you do with it.
Does forgiveness mean restored trust?
Not automatically. Trust is rebuilt over time through changed behavior. You can release someone from a debt and still, wisely, keep a boundary.
How long does it take?
Usually longer than we want. Forgiveness is often a decision made once and then kept, again and again, as the memory resurfaces.
